Think.Eat.Save - Reduce your foodprint!






Actually this is my first essay. I'm a little bit worried, but i will do my best. With this blog, I hope calling all of you to save our earth to better life. So, Lets join the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP )in 2013 World Environment Day.


I live in Banjarmasin. It is located in Kalimantan, the Indonesian territory of Borneo. South Kalimantan is also famous with its floating market. Indonesia is  a country that well known for its tropical forests, rich natural resources, and exotic flora and fauna. Also Indonesia has rich and diverse culinary traditions. You must try it. In this country, you can meet many product food that are not found in other countries.

Actually we cannot be separated from consume food. Food is our basic need. But, do you know that food can make disaster to our earth?

Every years consumers in rich countries waste almost as much food (222 million tonnes) as the entire net food production of sub-Saharan Africa (230 million tonnes). In the United States 30% of all food, worth US$ 48.3 billion (€32.5 billion), is thrown away each year. It is estimated that about half of the water used to produce this food also goes to waste, since agriculture is the largest human use of water.

As we know that carbon dioxide emissions is one of the most important cause of global warming. But dont forget with another gasses that cause global warming too such as Methane. The importance of methane in the greenhouse effect is its warming effect. Methane is 23 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas. Methane accounts for 20% of the enhanced greenhouse effect.  The most important that Food Waste makes up the largest proportion to produce methane gasses.


From an environmental standpoint, food waste produce a methane gas, a potent greenhouse gas.  According to Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), in the US a large customers waste around 40% of all edible food. Almost all of that uneaten food ends up rotting in landfills where it accounts for almost 25 percent of U.S. methane emissions. We know that methane gas emissions coming from food waste. It's not a small problem. If we just ignore it, it can to be greenhouse effect. And then too many nutrients of food waste sure can be a problem because they can pollute our groundwater and waterways. In effect, it will destroy ourselves.

This is just one way food waste effects the environment. Beside that production of food is very costly to the environment, land needs to be cleared to plant crops, fertilizers and pesticides are often used which damage the earth after years. In a reality the global population will be increased over time and makes the increase production of food and food waste. It's gonna be hard to reduce food waste but if we not try it can be more damage the earth.

Despite all of that, food waste is not good for ourlife. The hope that people will take cognizance of the impact of food waste.

So, What are solutions?

We can start from a small thing such as Recycling food waste and turning it into compost has many environmental benefits such as improving soil health and structure. Food waste can also be turned into renewable energy and a soil amendment through anaerobic digestion. It can significantly reduce the amount of organic waste ending up in landfills, while turning food waste into a usable resource.

Beside that we can reduce food waste with control our daily needs. Unconsciously we consume or buy food more than necessary. It makes to increase to be a food waste. Sometimes without us knowing, many people around of us are malnourished and die of starvation in the world. It makes us to realize that many people in there who need us to make a better life.

And the most important is intention to change our habits about food waste. By reducing the amount of food wasted, we can reduce greenhouse gas emissions.  We can save our earth. Actually easy to say but its hard to do. But if we have an intention to change our earth, so exactly we can do it.
